There are of course many considerations when deciding which print method to use for your packaging but advances in technology have been a real game changer for many businesses who are in the know.
Top quality print has long been the domain of litho print and, for long runs it often still is. However, the evolution of flexo print and digital print now means that there are options for many different applications and packaging needs. These options can dramatically impact positively on design, lead times and, importantly, your profitability.
It used to be that litho was the only option when a quality finish was required but that’s no longer the case. Digital print, for example, has greatly improved and is the reason that Fencor have invested heavily in two new large format digital printers for short to medium runs and in a new four colour flexographic printer for medium to long runs.
Take a look at the examples in the video and you’ll see included a box for Interflora that used to be litho printed. It is now produced flexographically. It still has a lovely sheen to it and uses metallic inks but we are able to produce it at a drastically reduced price.
One outcome of these technological advances is that in many instances, and for a number of packaging projects, digital printing is almost on a par with litho but comes in at greatly reduced prices.
Modern presses allow for very tight registration and what would have to be litho years ago can now often be run on flexographic printers. It’s not that long ago when flexo was limited to basic print such as arrows and ‘This Way Up’ messages. You’ll see in the attached video the level of accuracy and print quality we can now achieve. This option has given those that use it a real advantage over their competitors who don’t.
It is not just the progression of the technology and equipment that has led to this improvement but also the development of better inks, enhanced substrates, higher quality printing plates and, ultimately, the knowledge and the ability of the print operators to get the best out of all of them used together.
